How do I put money on someone's books in Chatham County Jail? ›

Deposit Kiosk

There are deposit kiosks located in the Video Visitation Center and the main lobby of the Chatham County Sheriff's Office. An inmate's family or friends may place cash or credit card deposits directly on the inmate's account.

If you cannot find your loved one on the Chatham County Detention Center inmate roster, you are advised to call the Chatham County Sheriffs Department at 912-652-7795 or fax 912-652-7660. The Chatham County jail staff will ask for the inmate's full name, age, gender, and other identifying data.

If an inmate asks you to put “money on his book” so he can make commissary purchases there are several ways you can do it; You can MAIL in a money order or cash. We highly recommend that you don't send cash through the mail. Personal checks are not accepted.

Currently, interstate (long distance) prison and phone rates are capped at $. 21/minute for debit and prepaid calls, and $. 25/minute for collect calls. Intrastate prison and phones rates are currently unregulated by the FCC, resulting in extremely high rates at county jails.

Most deposits arrive within 24-48 hours of processing.

So, what do they need money for? A lot, it turns out. Prisons typically provide the bare minimum when it comes to food, clothes, shoes and hygiene supplies. Some states provide items such as toothpaste, soap and limited amounts of letter-writing supplies only to the “indigent,” or those who have little to no money.
