Understanding the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded processors (1)

AMD while building on the long-lived legacy of the Geode LX processor family is planning the next generation of long-life Embedded Processor platforms. Adding what they have learned with their first attempt at redesigning the LX800, the AMD Embedded APU family of the G-Series and R-Series processors. AMD Embedded G-Series APU Platform was the world’s first combination of low-power CPU and advanced GPU integrated into a single SOC for embedded devices. Offering low power consumption but still has exceptional processor performance and graphics to match. This venture showed that multi-core processors will be needed in the embedded in the future, as demand for the T40 group of processors was higher than the single-core T16 version. While AMD struggled to get embedded and industrial products to change to the T16 G-series processor, this was designed to be the ideal replacement for the Geode LX800 processor.

AMD with the first generation of the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V-Series processor family, brought the “Zen” Core and the “Vega” GPU architectures together into a single SOC processor. This new SOC set a new standard in processing power for next-generation embedded systems and Industrial computer designs. AMD followed the V-Series Processor family with the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded R-Series processor family. The R-Series Processors are targeted to mid-range systems, not requiring extra CPU and GPU performance.

Delivering discrete-GPU caliber graphics and multimedia processing, and compute performance up to 3.61 TFLOPS with thermal design power (TDP) as low as 12W and as high as 54W, AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoCs equip system designers to achieve new levels of processing efficiency and design versatility. An industrial temperature processor option is also available that can operate in temperatures as low as -40°C.

The AMD Ryzen™ Embedded R1000 processor brings together the powerful performance of the pioneering “Zen” CPU and “Vega” GPU architectures into the R-series SOC. The Ryzen Embedded R1000 brings multi-threaded performance, for the first time, to the R-series of processors.

With up to 3x generational performance improvement per watt, and 4x better CPU and graphics performance per dollar than the competition, the R1000 is an ideal fit for embedded applications. Ryzen Embedded R1000 delivers a new class of performance in a seamlessly integrated single-chip solution. R1000 SoCs are platform compatible with the Ryzen Embedded V1000 Series and enable system designers to target efficient designs between 6W to 25W.

AMD set the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V-Series processors as high-performance models, offering performance graphics and powerful CPU options. While the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded R-Series processors are mid-range processors designed to be the workhorse models for budget-friendly product systems.

Starting with the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 and AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 these are the processors that are currently available (as of 5/5/2023, see AMD’s site for the latest information)-
