Jamaican Apple - Nutritional Value and Health Benefits

The Jamaican Otaheiti apple, so named because it resembles to Otaheite cashew apple, and also known as coco plum or Malay rose apple, is probably the second most popular fruit here in Jamaica, with mango being the first – well, in my opinion.

It is a red fleshy fruit that is shaped similar to the the American pear, in appearance. It actually looks like a cross between the American apple and pear, but in taste and texture it differs. New! See also Jamaican rose apple
As a matter of fact, I find that some J'can apples can be crunchy and crisp while others can be soft, juicy and a bit spongy… either way, its sumptuously delicious ;-)

This apple, scientifically know as the Syzygium Malaccense, is a species of flowering tree believed to have been originated from Malaysia (hence the name Malay rose apple), but is also tied to Australia, Vietnam, Thailand, New Guinea and Indonesia.
It was introduced to Jamaica in 1793, where it as since flourished and has become apart of our culture so much so that, even though It can be found on other Caribbean Islands, it is one of the fruits that is used to “identify” us.
I can tell you without a doubt that 90% of Jamaicans love this apple. Whenever they are in season, vendors “nuh have han fi sell (they go fast)!!”
I for one love when they are deep red, so deep they look black, because thats when they are the sweetest and juiciest!
Nutritional Value Of Jamaican Apple
Not only is the this apple tasty to eat, but it has a number of nutritional values that will benefit you as you enjoy one of these delicious fruits!!
Here a some of the vitamins and minerals that are found in Jamaican apples:

Jamaican Apple Drink Recipe
INGREDIENTS
- 3 Large J'can apples
- 1 Lime
- Honey to taste
- Ginger
- 2 Cups of water
- 2 small mint leaves for garnish
METHOD
- Wash and cut apples into slices (leave skin on)
- Add water to blender then add apples, lime juice, three slices of ginger and honey to taste.
- Blend on high.
- Enjoy with crushed ice. Garnish with mint leaves.
