What happens if you don't have enough money to go to the vet? ›

If your animal requires emergency veterinary care and you can't afford treatment, contact nearby veterinary colleges to see if they have any emergency assistance programs. If you are unsure what qualifies as emergency veterinary care, call your veterinarian and describe the symptoms.

Admissions and Education

There is only one college of veterinary medicine in Missouri, one of 33 in the nation. Approximately 125 students will be accepted to the class entering the MU College of Veterinary Medicine in the fall out of nearly 2,000 applicants.

Minimum GPA Requirements

Students wishing to apply to the DVM Professional Program must meet all three minimum grade point average (GPA) requirements: 2.90 overall. 3.10 for the last 45 semester hours. 2.9 science.

The NAVLE is notoriously one of the most difficult exams that a veterinary student will take. With a wide range of topics to cover, it proves to be challenging for many.

Some vets will work with you but you have to be up-front and honest with them from the start; there are also some more creative ways to pay, such as Care Credit and Scratch Pay, etc. Try to have money set aside for your unexpected (and your regular, expected) vet visits.

There is help available. You can look into government financial assistance programs, animal rescue foundations, resource centers, charity organizations, or crowdfunding platforms that raise funds specifically for pet medical expenses, like Waggle.org.

Medical school is slightly more difficult to enter than Veterinarian school. It takes almost as long and is just as difficult to become a veterinarian as it does to become a human doctor. Veterinarians must earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited veterinary college.

The second quarter of second year is deemed the hardest quarter in vet school by many upperclassmen; this proved to be very true. This quarter, we learned about every bacterium, parasite, and virus an animal could get and, wow, was it overwhelming!

Of 1,098 admitted students, 930 (84.7%) completed veterinary school within four years in the top 90% of their class. Among students with academic difficulty, 94 (8.6%) completed veterinary school in four years in the 10th percentile, 44 (4%) experienced academic delay, and 30 (2.7%) were dismissed.

That depends on the curriculum requirements at your college. Calculus provides a mental tool-set for modelling the physical world, so it is a foundation to all science. Veterinary practice includes science disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and biology so it is likely you do need calculus.
